FREAK ANIMAL HISTORY:
1992-1993
Before Freak Animal existed tape label called Nykto-tapes, which was active during late 92
to late 93 and released 9 tapes, by: Grunt, Noise Waste, A.N.H., few compilations, etc.
Label did also other releases than pure noise. Like Nykto-tapes, in the beginning Freak
Animal did not have clear focus on what to release. There are handful of releases which
stand out of line and main reason is that those were co-released with other labels, who
financed other side of the split release.
1994
Freak Animal started in late '93 or early '94. Tape series reached total of 19
tapes until it was stopped in '98. Now almost all of the are permanently sold out as tape
format, but some will be re-released on vinyls. There came one more tape later to complete
series to nice round number of 20.
1995
Significant step of starting vinyl series (and therefore really become Freak Animal
RECORDS) happened in '95 and several split releases was done in co-operation with
other small labels/bands. 7" series continued until 2001 or so, until put on ice due
high costs of 7" manufacturing. In 1995 also LP series was started with couple of
10"s mLPs.
1996/1997
LP and CD series had real stronger start in '96/97, most of the early ones was published
in co-operation with other labels, but 1997 also stands as one milestone in Freak Animal's
history, as at that time most of the label split releases were stopped and Freak Animal
could publish material 100% alone and therefore labels own vision started to become more
clear. There was published several international and rather famous artists (The Haters,
Richard Ramirez, Aube, Incapacitants, K2..) among the smaller uknown ones.
1998-2002
In end of 1997 and 1998 Freak Animal started to focus more on the rising Finnish scene,
and started to ignore most of international artists. Only few international releases were
done. Freak Animal also started in 1999 CDr series. None of them have catalog numbers and
early ones don't have even Freak Animal logos, but all was listed/distributed among normal
FA releases. CDr series was discontinued in 2005 with decision to focus on real CD and LP.
2003-2004
When decision to start putting out small CD editions was made, was also decided that there
is no reason to ignore good international artists, and many of old contacts were asked to
do recordings for FA and also some new ones signed.
2005
Despite many of releases in past year(s) had been in CD format, limited vinyl LP's was not
forgotten. Vinyl LP series was resurrected in early 2005 with strong kick putting out 5
LP's at the same time. Several new releases are planned and they will be manufactured c.
100 copies each. Same time small edition (200-300 copies) real CD's are coming as often or
even more often than before. For more than 10 years, Freak Animal remains true to its
roots and will keep publishing raw noise and power electronics in style that's been there
for many years. Despite there is handful of "professional" releases (LP's with
standard factory made cover or CD's in jewelcases with glossy booklets), most of Freak
Animal releases have been, are, and will be very underground style. Handmade covers,
xeroxed inserts, roughly offset printed packages, CD's in alternative covers, etc etc. I
personally see Freak Animal to continue in same spirit of late 80's / early 90's (tape-)
labels and there is no huge interest to join into mass of "professional" /
mainstream-look-a-like releases. In my opinion there is already too many power electronics
records which look like lame techo CD's.
