Recordings are semi/improvised using contact microphones, amplified metal objects, domestic radio receivers, instrument effects pedals, environmental/found sounds, tape loops, damaged electrical devices, analogue synthesizers, feedback from various sources, turntables & “prepared” vinyl. Traditional instruments such as guitar, organ and tuned metal instruments (gongs, cymbals, prayer bowls) have also been used as part of the recording process.

After much buggerising around I am proud to announce the latest in the series of split tapes which features Von Einem, the newest project by Mark Groves. Mr Groves is a stalwart in the Melbourne extreme music scene, and his Power Electronics projects are, to my mind, some of the finest in the world; they are, and have always been, stand-out amidst the current wash of Noise projects in town. His solo project Absoluten Calfeutrail and PE duo with Leith Thomas, Dead Boomers, have relied on extreme tension and snarling negativity drawn from deep personal emotions, and have produced both exceptional recordings and memorable, powerful live performances. Von Einem is more of a home recording project for Mark. As a former South Australian, he was struck by the so-called "Family Murders", a series of killings claiming five (known) young lives - the only conviction so far being that of Bevan Spencer von Einem . Mark´s response has been a series of harsh, mostly instrumental spears of feedback driven electronics with a filthier and less restrained sound than previous works. This release features two tracks, "Gag" and "Hope Forest". Screwtape´s side is "Death And Erection", a slow and sludgey piece of Thunge Noise of heavy, distorted synthesisers through effects and treated samples.

C-60 of VERY minimal synth tests made after intense holiday readings of the books of COMMANDER X. The new studio has just been set up and the recordings on this tape were from a session I did to get reacquainted with my synthesizers. Unlike every other SS release, there is no tape delay FX used on these recordings..some LIGHT reverb on the B-side from an old ´echo-verb´ unit I recently acquired, but other than that it´s raw synth. The A side is a triple synth sample and hold exercise using Dotcom Modular, Yamaha CS-5, and Moog Rogue. The B-side is an ULTRA minimal pulse ambience piece for Moog Rogue and Lafayette Echo-Verb. This side was very influenced by a tape called CHAMBER MUSIC originally released in 1984 by STRENGTH THROUGH JOY. I got the tape quite a few years ago and remember being struck by how minimal it was. I wasn´t too fond of it at the time, but I think about it quite a lot and I think it´s influenced a lot of my output, especially my more recent recordings. I think of it as ambient music, not ´ambient´ as in the genre, but as sounds to surround yourself with while doing something else. Throw this one on and read some COMMANDER X!
