On their ninth studio album Der Blutharsch continues travelling in the direction they took back in 2005, when the former guru of martial industrial/military pop, Albin Julius, and his band, rocketed towards the deep space of psychedelia. One of the most controversial bands of the last decade staked its claim anew, totally breaking with old images, cliches and tunes. Starting already on the last album The Philosopher´s Stone the turning to the walls of guitars and repetitive chants was already to recognize. Flying High turns this to a programmatic climax. If you start thinking on Sunn O))), Guru Guru, Amon Dül, Tangerine Dream or Godspeed You! Black Emperor you are not to far away, but still inherent is the big part of apocalyptic feeling which you are already used to. Highly influenced by the amercican West Coast Sound of the late sixties with a small dosis of that what some people use to call Krautrock. The tracks are slightly developing into eachother, ambient parts followed by ecstatic deathrock songs and then they glide into a wall of sound. The guestparts on the vocal side is full of well know artists: Besides Bain Wolfkind and Albin Julius or Gianni Serusi, you discover 1980s legend Patrick Leagas who himself celebrates the title song in his typical distinctive manner. Flying High is a dark record, it mixes eros and deathwish, productivity with desctructivity. Since the release of, "When Did Wonderland End?", Der Blutharsch have mutated into a psychedelic rock monster; their motto, "into new territories!", symbolic for this mutation, a battle fought not by marching but by flying, ´Flying high!´. Flying high! is a weird trip for blown minds through the dark worlds of today´s society, passing love, hate and lust during its journey into the center of the sun! Abigail and NWN! have each mutated into different beasts; however. the relationship between these two forces has remained intact through the years. To honor the nearly 20 year legacy of Abigail. NWN! is proud to present this vinyl collection of some of the band’s earliest work. Along with pioneers Sabbat and Sigh. Abigail have long been recognized as among the most influential Black Metal bands to have emerged from beneath the banner of the Rising Sun. While. in recent years. Abigail has shifted its focus to a more depraved blackened thrash sound. the early work presented on this LP is pure Black Metal played in a manner that is harsh and hostile. This LP opens with the five Abigail tracks featured on the band’s 1995 split CD with Funeral Winds. This material. which has never before been released on vinyl. displays the characteristic wickedness that permeates all of Abigail’s work. These tracks are not merely excursions in sound. however. Each song stands out on its own and the work as a whole evinces a sophisticated level of composition and production. Side B of this LP contains the tracks from Abigail’s first two EP releases. Nearly impossible to find now. “Descending from a Blackened Sky” and “Confound Eternal” contain some of Abigail’s most powerful and blackened revelations. The 1993 “Descending from a Blackened Sky” EP. executed entirely by Yasuyuki. is a magnificent breath of annihilation. Guided by furious and relentless blast beats. Yasuyuki’s style on this EP is more harsh and raw than most of Abigail’s other work. Yet. as with all Abigail recordings. amid the chaos there are well-crafted riffs and song structures that draw the listener deep into the demonic frenzy of the songs. “Confound Eternal” may be Abigail’s most refined statement prior to the release of their first album. This release marks the first appearance of Youhei on drums to supplement the wrath of Yasuyuki’s scathing guitars and vocals. an addition which allowed Yasuyuki to incorporate a greater variety of tempos and stylistic elements. These details. such as the band’s penchant for shifting suddenly. yet seamlessly. between manic blast beats and mid-paced stomp rhythms have come to define the Abigail sound. Importantly. Yasuyuki incorporates a greater array of melodic structure into the riffs on this EP as well. Indeed. every element of the band’s sound on this release is more concentrated. The guitars. particularly the use of solos. are superior to that any of the band’s prior recordings and Yasuyuki’s vocals are the howls of possession. That both of these songs were re-recorded and included on the band’s debut LP in 1997 demonstrates that the band recognized that its sound was becoming more focused and refined. This is largely due to the collaborative nature of this project. Helmkamp conceived and composed these songs in conjunction with guitarist. B. Wolaniuk. Adding further definition to the work. the legendary J. Read (Cremation. Conqueror. Revenge. Axis of Advance) was recruited as a session drummer to lend his demonic warfare percussion to this recording as well. Emanating from this combination of talent is the most important work of Occult Black Metal to emerge from the U.S. in years. “Cloven Hooves at the Holocaust Dawn” presents an entirely new sound that. while clearly operating within the schematic of modern Black Metal. also incorporates unexpected elements arriving at a sound at once militaristic and metaphysical. Thematically. “Cloven Hooves at the Holocaust Dawn” is steeped in myriad strains of esoteric thought. but is presented with a vigor and severity that is uniquely contemporary and uniquely North American. It is infused with an Occult sensibility without getting lost in its own mysticism. It is intelligent. but avoids self-indulgent and pseudo-intellectual posturing. Indeed Kerasphorus demonstrate a groundedness in their approach to Black Metal that is peculiar and engaging. In this work. one finds a blueprint for confronting apocalyptic ruin with potency and fortitude.
